Making India Energy Secure: How Cairn Oil & Gas is Leading the Nation towards #EnergyAatmanirbharta

India is a rapidly growing country among the G20 nations and one of the world’s largest energy consumers. However, with the ongoing global pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine conflict, meeting the country’s growing demand for crude oil has become increasingly challenging. Currently, India fulfils 85% of its crude oil demand through imports, highlighting the urgent need to explore new fields and increase domestic production.

To address this issue, the Indian government has taken various measures to boost domestic production and reduce the country’s dependence on imports. Recently, Prime Minister Modi called for achieving “energy aatmanirbharta” by 2040, which translates to attaining self-sufficiency for India’s energy needs. This goal of domestic energy production in India will help the country achieve sustainable and long-term energy security. “The open acreage and national data repository will help companies participate in fields they are interested in and help increase the exploration interest in Indian fields.” – Honourable PM Narendra Modi.

By exploring new fields and investing in renewable energy sources, India can not only reduce its dependence on imports but also create new opportunities for economic growth and job creation. The government’s commitment to achieving energy self-sufficiency is a positive step towards a more sustainable and resilient future for the country.

Cairn Oil & Gas, being the largest private player in the sector is making significant progress towards achieving this goal, without compromising its environmental commitments. Cairn’s vision is to transform the energy sector responsibly, by adopting innovation-led exploration and production technologies, and keeping sustainability at the core of the business.

Cairn’s approach not only supports India’s economic growth but also promotes a cleaner and more sustainable future for the country.

Largest Producer of Crude Oil in India

Cairn Oil and Gas is India’s largest private crude oil producer, accounting for ~25% of the country’s crude production. The company has made significant field discoveries in more than ~50 blocks across different states, such as Rajasthan, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Assam, Maharashtra, and others. One of its most notable discoveries is the Mangala oilfield in Rajasthan, the longest continuously heated and insulated pipeline in the world, which runs from its oil fields in Rajasthan to refineries in Gujarat, ~705 kms. All the Above Ground Installations (AGIs) across Mangala pipeline will be solar operated by 2025.

Cairn Oil & Gas is dedicated to expanding its production to contribute 50% of India’s crude output, supporting the country’s vision of energy aatmanirbharta. By leveraging its expertise and technological capabilities, the company aims to increase domestic production while adhering to strict safety and environmental standards. Cairn Oil & Gas plays a crucial role in India’s energy sector by contributing to its domestic crude production, promoting energy self-sufficiency, and creating employment opportunities. Cairn believes in closely monitoring the global landscape and practices, in order to address the challenges with a proactive vision.

Cairn Oil & Gas expands its exploration portfolio to boost oil production and support India’s energy aatmanirbharta vision.

Cairn Oil & Gas, the largest private oil and gas producer in India, has a world-class resource base, with a current interest in 62 blocks in India, including the 38 blocks under the Open Acreage Licensing Policy (OALP) Round I auction, 5 blocks under Round II and 3 blocks under Round III, 2 awarded under the Discovered Small Fields (DSF) Round-II and 8 under DSF Round-III, and one Coal Bed Methane (CBM) block.

Cairn is committed to increasing its production and significantly contributing to the country’s vision of energy aatmanirbharta. The company aims to explore new hydrocarbon sources and increase its resource base, across both conventional and unconventional resources. Cairn is also exploring unconventional fuels such as tight oil and shale which have great potential to meet the growing demands of the country, and have already started exploration for the same.

Overall, Cairn Oil & Gas’ expanded exploration portfolio is poised to boost oil production significantly and support India’s efforts towards achieving energy self-sufficiency.
